Ozempic is an FDA-approved weekly injectable drug used to control blood sugar in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes.
Moreover, it provides a few extra perks to its owner and can be prescribed off-label for the treatment of obesity. The drug is manufactured by Novo Nordisk. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, which means that the medication causes the pancreas to produce insulin in case of excessive blood sugar level.
Ozempic works similarly to a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone produced by the human body naturally, which controls blood sugar levels, prevents gastric emptying and regulates appetite, making it a useful medication in terms of both treating diabetes and obesity.
The medication comes in a pen which is pre-filled and ready to use. The frequency of injections depends on a prescription provided by your doctor; however, usually the medication should be injected once a week. There are several dosages of Ozempic available, including 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg.
Ozempic has been proved to:
Decrease HbAlc
Cause weight loss in patients with obesity or being overweight
Prevent major cardiovascular adverse events (like stroke or heart attack) in patients with type 2 diabetes who have heart diseases
